Introducing Releash: New Waist Leash created by Bluefin – A Q&A with our Product Design Team

, Introducing Releash: New Waist Leash created by Bluefin – A Q&A with our Product Design Team

We caught up with our product design team to discuss the behind the scene actions that created the Releash.

Why did you want to create the Releash?

Even though the ankle leash is a key part of safety equipment on the water, there are some situations  where a different type of leash would be more effective at keeping users safe. Although the ankle leash serves its purpose well, in rough water conditions it’s not always possible to reach down to your ankle to detach yourself from your board in emergency situations. So, the Releash came to life.

The aim of the Releash has always been to reduce the risk of entanglement in the water when you need to quickly break free from your board. This was the sole purpose of the Releash to ensure users can quickly and easily detach themselves from their board in dangerous water conditions. Therefore the focus of the product in the design process was simple, easily allowing users to detach from their SUP to help keep riders as safe as possible.

How was it tested?

To ensure the structure and components of the Releash were suitable for its intended use on the water it was tested with mechanical load and release tested by an independent lab to ensure it is up to safety standards. The Releash has also been put through its paces on excursions at our head office with the Bluefin team.

What are the key features of the Releash?

The dual release QR buckles which are found on both sides of the Releash mean even if it slips around your waist they will always be a toggle you can reach if needed. This means you don’t have to worry that the release toggle is in reaching distance when you’re focusing on your paddleboarding skills, giving a higher level of safety access.

The tow line & carabina which is included with the belt is also a key feature which could aid the potential rescue of fellow paddle boarders who are in danger on the water. In addition to this, the tow line can also be used in group situations when paddling with beginners or children to ensure they stay with their team out on the water.

Also, the Releash can be adjusted to any body shape. As directed on the packaging you can adapt the length of the belt to suit you which ensures a successful release and minimizes the chance of the belt being caught or snagged. The Releash also partners with the current ankle leash which comes with our boards. Simply attach your ankle leash around the Releash instead of your ankle and away you go.

Great design, bought a Red one a week before yours came out and it’s flimsy. Will be ordering a bluefin one in time. I have a bluefin 10’8″ cruise and want to buy a proper Touring fin for it which is hard to find for the smart locking system. Would be great if Bluefin designed their own touring fin for that lock system.
